What is Oil Sweetening?

Oil sweetening, or slipstreaming, involves drawing used oil from the engine and feeding it into the compressor component to lubricate the packing and cylinders of the equipment.

Oil sweetening is popular with some operators of natural gas compressors in North America, but should you do it? No doubt, it can offer some benefits.
But it also comes with some operational risks.

Potential Benefits:

  • Only one tank to fill
  • Extended oil drain intervals
  • Lower initial product cost

Potential Drawbacks:

  • Contamination
  • Effect on maintenance
  • Engine wear
